The Department of Radiology, Experimental Radiology, is looking for a
PhD Student in System Design for Light Coils in Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI is ideally suited to study soft tissue diseases, dynamic brain function, or interventional procedures, but these applications require both a high temporal and spatial resolution. In MRI, receive coil arrays improve the local image SNR which can be used to shorten the acquisition time or to enhance the spatial resolution. The major limitation in constructing and operating dense receive coil arrays is the need for conducting cables for signal and power transmission. Electrically conducting cables do not only present a potential safety hazard in MRI due to the RF-induced heating, but they also reduce the image SNR and parallel imaging performance due to signal cross-talk. To overcome these challenges, we recently proposed the Light Coil concept, a novel modular MRI receive coil concept based on optical data and power transmission.
In this DFG-funded PhD project, signal and power backbones for a 32 channel Light Coil system will be designed together with the
Institute of MicroOptics at IMTEK (JProf. Dr. Caglar Ataman). Integration of photonic and electronic ICs will be realized, and a physical interconnection and a system control unit will be developed. In our department we are working on MRI technologies and applications since the 1980s. Therefore, we operate up-to-date research and clinical MRI systems, covering a magnetic field range from 1.5T to 9.4T, including a new 3T MRI system with 200mT/m gradients, and fully-equipped chemical, electronics, mechanical, RF and EMC labs.
The successful candidate should have an interest in biomedical research, motivation to develop high quality research products and their application to brain research.
The basic requirements are:
We offer:
- an interdisciplinary dynamic research environment and the state-of-the-art lab equipment
- national and international cooperations (visits supported)
- emerging field of research
- competitive salary (TV-L, 65%)
